Awnings vs Pergolas: Which Is Right for Your Garden?

By Origin Shutters·

Both extend your outdoor living space — but in very different ways. A straightforward guide to help you decide.

More homeowners than ever are investing in their outdoor spaces — and with good reason. A well-designed garden or patio can genuinely extend your living space for a significant part of the year. But when it comes to shading and shelter, the choice between an awning and a pergola isn't always obvious.

Here's a straightforward guide to help you decide.

What's the difference?

An awning is a retractable fabric canopy that extends from the wall of your home over a patio or terrace. When you want shade, you extend it. When you don't — or when the weather turns — you retract it back into its housing. Awnings come with manual operation as standard, with motorised control available as an upgrade.

A pergola (specifically a louvred roof pergola) is a freestanding or wall-mounted aluminium structure with an adjustable louvred roof. The louvres rotate to let in sun, provide shade, or close completely to keep out rain. It's a more permanent structure — think of it as an outdoor room rather than a shade solution.

When an awning is the right choice

Awnings work particularly well when:

You want flexibility. An awning can be fully retracted, leaving your garden completely open on sunny days when you want full light. This is ideal for smaller gardens or south-facing patios where you don't want to lose the sun entirely.

You're working with a limited budget. A quality retractable awning represents excellent value compared to a full pergola structure, and can still transform how you use your outdoor space.

You want a clean look when not in use. Modern cassetted awnings retract into a neat aluminium housing that sits flush against the wall — barely visible when closed.

Your space is wall-adjacent. Awnings extend from a wall, so they work best over patios directly outside bi-fold doors, French doors or sliding glazed walls.

When a pergola is the right choice

A louvred roof pergola is the right investment when:

You want year-round use. With the louvres closed, a pergola keeps out rain completely. Add an infrared heater and some LED lighting and you have a genuinely usable outdoor space even in autumn and winter — something an awning simply can't provide.

You want to create a defined outdoor room. A pergola has real architectural presence. It defines a space, creates a sense of enclosure, and can be furnished like an extension of your home.

You have a larger budget and a larger garden. Pergolas are a more significant investment than awnings, but the return in terms of lifestyle — and potentially property value — is considerable.

You want optional extras. Our pergolas can be specified with integrated LED lighting, infrared heaters, and side screens or panels for privacy and wind protection. The result is genuinely an outdoor living room.

Can you have both?

Yes — and it can be a very effective combination. A pergola creating a defined seating area, with an awning extending further over an adjacent dining space, gives you maximum flexibility and coverage.

What about planning permission?

In most cases, garden awnings and pergolas don't require planning permission in the UK, as they fall within permitted development rights. However, if your property is listed, in a conservation area, or if the structure is particularly large, it's worth checking with your local authority before you proceed. We're happy to advise based on your specific situation.
