Shutters vs Blinds: Which Is Right for Your Home?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked. Both shutters and blinds can transform a room — but they work differently, suit different homes, and come with different price points. Here's an honest guide to help you decide.

What are the main differences?

Shutters are a fixed, structural window dressing. They're fitted directly into or around your window frame and become a permanent feature of the room — much like joinery. Blinds, by contrast, are hung above the window and can be removed or replaced relatively easily.

This distinction matters more than it might seem. Shutters add a sense of permanence and quality that blinds simply can't replicate. But blinds offer flexibility, a wider range of fabrics and colours, and a lower entry price point.

When shutters are the better choice

Shutters tend to work best when:

You want a clean, timeless look. Shutters have no trailing cords, no fabric to fade or snag, and no valance to collect dust. They look as good in ten years as they do on day one.

Privacy and light control matter. The adjustable louvres on a shutter give you precise control over both — tilting them to let light in while maintaining privacy from the street. No other window treatment does this as well.

You have bay windows, large windows or unusual shapes. Shutters are made to measure for every window, which makes them particularly effective in challenging spaces where off-the-shelf blinds struggle.

You're thinking about kerb appeal or property value. Shutters are visible from the street and immediately signal quality. Many homeowners find they add to the overall presentation of the property.

When blinds are the better choice

Blinds tend to work best when:

You want more colour or pattern. With hundreds of fabrics available, blinds offer far more scope for personality. A Roman blind in a beautiful linen or a day-and-night blind in a subtle texture can be a real feature in its own right.

You need a more affordable solution. Blinds generally cost less than shutters for the same window, which matters when you're dressing multiple rooms at once.

You rent your home. Blinds are easier to install without permanent fixings and simpler to take with you when you move.

You have a conservatory or roof lantern. Specialist roof blinds can be a practical and cost-effective solution for glazed ceilings where shutters aren't suitable.

Can you mix shutters and blinds?

Absolutely — and it can look really effective. A common approach is shutters on the main living areas and hallways (where the visual impact is greatest), and blinds in bedrooms, kitchens or utility rooms where practicality and cost matter more.

What about cost?

Shutters are a considered investment. For a typical window in Herefordshire or the Cotswolds, expect to pay more than you would for a blind — but the product lasts significantly longer, requires almost no maintenance, and tends to look better with age.

Blinds offer excellent value, particularly our made-to-measure range which is manufactured to a high specification right here in the UK.
